BMW N20 P0299: why your 328i throws an underboost code, and what to check first

Most N20 underboost faults come down to three parts. Here is how to tell them apart in an afternoon, before you pay for a turbo you probably don't need.

A charge pipe crack, a wastegate actuator out of adjustment or a failing diverter valve all set the same P0299 code, but they sound and test differently — a hiss on boost points at the charge pipe, a rattle at idle points at the wastegate, and a hesitation on light throttle points at the diverter valve.
